  • Playtech Slot Game :Archer

Theme and Storyline Archer is a slot that has clearly been built around the iconography of Robin Hood, but has leaned away from being direct about it in the title. Given how familiar we all are with the Robin Hood mythos, it is no bad thing that this slot takes a different tack. Making what was old, new again. Perhaps it was for the same reason their Robin Hood looks rather old, and their Friar Tuck and Guy Gisborne look eerily like brothers. The strange character designs notwithstanding, Archer does a nice take on the story with a well-built world for the characters to inhabit and plenty of medieval style in the designs. Graphics, Sounds and Animations Archer’s graphics are well designed, offering a neat new take on the familiar characters. There is some pixelation in the imagery that gives the whole thing the feel of late-90s point and click adventures. The animations are a little basic. And really just highlight the few things that are necessary to make wins clear and to sell the player on the idea that there really are reels spinning. There is also a musical track that plays as part of the spin sounds and does a good job of echoing the musical score of those technicolour classics put out by Hollywood in the mid-20th Century. Gameplay Archer is on the face of it a simple five reel slot with three rows and an any way wins system. However, it sports a neat little gameplay feature in the base game called Expand and Split. Random cells on the reels have an arrow border. When these symbols are part of a winning combo and a Scatter is present on the reels, they expand to fill their entire row. However, instead of replacing the other symbols on the reel, those other symbols split and become both their original symbol and the expanded one. Wilds, Bonuses and Free Spins The Wild symbol substitutes for all symbols except the Scatter symbol and appears on reels two, three and four. Three or more Scatter symbols anywhere on the reels trigger a Free Spin bonus in which the player starts with seven free spins. They also pay out twice the player’s bet per spin for three Scatters, and ten and fifty times the player’s bet for four and five Scatters respectively. During the free spins, the Expand and Split feature is triggered for all symbols with an arrow border if they are part of a winning combination. This is different from the base game, where the Expand and Split feature is triggered only when a Scatter is also present. Free Spins can be retriggered with no upper limit to the total number of Free Spins. Bet Sizes, RTP and Variance The return to player of this game is 94.99%, a little over a percentage point below our yardstick for average of roughly 96%. This counts badly against the game, especially as the volatility is only medium. Medium volatility makes this slot a poor match for our preferred slot machine strategies. Our slot strategies target the highest possible volatility. This could be made up for by a generous RTP, but this slot opts to steal from the rich, without giving to the poor. Conclusion Archer is a fun, immersive Robin Hood-themed slot with some nice little visual quirks that keep it fresh. However, once the surface is scratched, the game is rather dull. The Expand and Split feature by itself is interesting, but does not manage to work with the other features to create something worth playing. On top of this the poor RTP means the game is expensive to play, and the medium volatility won’t work as well with our slot strategies as higher volatility games.

  • Playtech Slot Game : Highway Kings

Theme and Storyline Highway Kings is set among the world of long distance truckers. At the top of the screen are a pair of the enormous Peterbilts that haul eighteen-wheelers along Route 66 in an endless cycle of mobile, high-speed capitalism. That can be a perfect metaphor for the American dream, and in some ways for the slot industry. There’s not much in the way of story to accompany the range of piston heads, tyres, fluffy dice, and spark plugs. But the theme is solidly presented and the iconic lorries make for striking visuals. Graphics, Sounds and Animations Those visuals could be executed better. With the exception of the trucks themselves, the symbols feel a little under designed. The artwork is clear enough, but has a slightly cheap and cheerful look to it. The background is a simple blue gradient, and doesn’t add very much. The animations are as basic as they come. One for the reel, and blinking lines to indicate wins. Sound gets a little more effort. There are metallic spin sounds and a horn which honks when a winning combination lands. These sound effects generate some atmosphere, but without music or ambient sound to back them up, they feel tinny and isolated. Gameplay To go with its simple visuals, Highway Kings offers similarly stripped down gameplay. A basic five reel slot, with three rows and one to nine win lines that pay both from left and right. Highway Kings It comes without a gamble feature or bonuses. This is truly the minimalist experience. Wilds, Bonuses and Free Spins The Wild symbol substitutes for all symbols except the Scatter symbol. Any win containing a Wild has a multiplier of x2 applied to it. Highway Kings There are no Free Spins or Bonuses in this game. Bet Sizes, RTP and Variance The return to player of this game is 97.06%, one full percentage point above our yardstick for average of roughly 96%. The range of bets on the site we tested ran from a minimum bet per spin of $/£/€0.01 up to a maximum of $/£/€9.00 per spin. This favours lower stakes players. Anyone looking for higher limits might have to shop around to find a casino that offers them. The volatility of this game is high. Combining this with the high RTP, this slot is a brilliant match for our preferred slot strategies. Our slot machine strategies tend to target the highest possible volatility. Conclusion A solid, simple slot with enough atmospheric details to get away with so simple a design. Both visuals and gameplay are simple. There are no bonuses or other extras in play. Instead the player just spins and either wins or loses. This kind of pure experience will only appeal to certain kinds of players. If it does appeal to you, we have additional good news. The RTP is nice and high (97.09%) and the volatility is through the roof. Put together that makes this slot a lovely match for our preferred strategies. We highly recommend this slot.

  • Playtech Slot Game : King Kong

Theme and Storyline Welcome to Skull Island, where the water is warm but the locals are decidedly unfriendly. Based on Peter Jackson’s epic and under-rated remake of the 1930s classic King Kong, this slot takes you from Skull Island to the Island of Manhattan in your pursuit of, and then your attempt to recapture, the mighty Kong – and along the way, hopefully, haul in a little coin. Big blockbuster movies are good source material for slots, and the iconography of King Kong with its jungle settings, wild beasts and iconic biplane vs beast finale provide plenty of imagery to work with. Graphics, Sounds and Animations Which is why it is odd that the slot is so visually lacklustre. The animation is shiny and smooth, and the soundtrack understated and immersive (just drums when you spin and a little musical sting when you win). But for some reason, with the full range of Skull Island’s flora and fauna to choose from the slot designers have opted to leave out the giant spiders and T-rexes from the images. They even ignore the fearsome indigenous people whose painted faces and piercings are the kind of striking visuals a slot needs. Instead, the symbols are just a few of the main cast (Adrian Brody, Naomi Watts and Jack Black) some archaeological looking Ace to Ten symbols and then, of course, King himself who appears rarely in the role of a Wild symbol. Gameplay The gameplay is pretty straightforward stuff. King Kong is a 20 win-line five reel slot. Its main innovation is to have two modes in which the setting changes. When you hit the Skull Island bonus (more on the bonus systems below) in the jungle setting and win a cash prize the background changes to the city and you continue playing in the new City Mode. City Mode doesn’t change the payouts but it does change the bonus game to the Tower bonus. Overall the gameplay shows little imagination and underuses the Theme they chose. Wilds, Bonuses and Free Spins Each of the modes (Jungle and City) have slightly different twists on the two bonus modes. Kong’s face acts as a Wild symbol and also triggers a respin feature. In Jungle mode, you get three free spins. During the Jungle mode respin feature, the game locks any Wild symbols in place for any subsequent spins. While the City mode respin feature makes whole columns wild for each of the free respins (1+5 in respin one, 2+4 in respin two, and 1+3+5 in respin three). There is also a Scatter symbol the Kong 8th Wonder of the World symbol. Hit three or more of these on a spin and you trigger a Bonus game. During the Jungle phase, this triggers a bonus game in which you pick locations and match three creatures to win prizes. While during the city phase, hitting three or more Scatters in City mode will launch the Tower Bonus game in which you win random prizes based on which of three planes you knock down as Kong. When you play a Bonus game, the setting automatically flips back to the previous mode. You always start the game in Jungle mode. Bet Sizes, RTP and Variance With a return of 95.50%, King Kong has a pretty standard payout. It is slightly at the lower end of what we estimate the average payout to be for slots like this, but is certainly not bad. It is a relatively high-variance slot with regular very large payouts coming along very rarely. But being well worth it when they do. It does allow you to control that variance a fair bit with the number of winlines. By allowing you any number between 1 and 20 winlines you can manipulate both your bet sizes and variance to a very granular level. Conclusion While King Kong fails to do all it could with its chosen setting, the gameplay is ultimately quite fun. But only if you can stick with it long enough to hit the bonus features which add a pleasant twist to an otherwise very slick, but very conventional slot machine.

  • Playtech Slot Game : Gladiator Jackpot

Theme and Storyline Gladiator Jackpot is a movie themed slot which follows the plot of the classic Ridley Scott movie Gladiator. Unfortunately, getting the trademark didn’t give them the rights to Russell Crowe’s likeness, so the main character does not appear anywhere in the game. One additional strangeness about this slot is the fact that the word "colosseum" is spelled throughout as "coliseum", a medieval alternative spelling that hasn’t been widely used for six hundred years. There are plenty of Rome themed slots that feel closer in tone to the movie than this one. If you want a slot that captures the feel of that film, play one of them. Graphics, Sounds and Animations Despite having movie studio approval the final product is a bit rickety. Adjusting screen size away from the scale the designers built it results in ugly pixelation. The choice of character photos are uninspiring and the animations simple involve swapping in a new picture and zooming in and out. There is no backing music. A massive oversight given the influence the original Hans Zimmer soundtrack had. Even a faded imitation would have been better than the generic win and spin sounds the makers selected. Overall, the design of this slot is enormously disappointing for fans of either slot machines, or the movie Gladiator. Gameplay The base game is a basic five reel slot with three rows. The game has twenty-five win lines, which are adjustable. There is no gamble feature. Though it has two bonus games, these do not do much for the pacing or excitement of a game that seems to have been worked on with very limited effort. Wilds, Bonuses and Free Spins The Wild symbol substitutes for all symbols except the Scatter symbol. Three or more Wild symbols landing on one spin trigger the Gladiator Jackpot Bonus. This allows the player a spin on special reels. There are nine spots on a grid, each spot gets one of three Helmet symbols in either Gold, Silver, or Bronze. The metal corresponds to a particular multiplier. The player wins the total value of all nine Helmets. If all nine are Gold Helmets, then the player wins the progressive jackpot (unless the bonus was triggered during a free spin). Three or more Scatter symbols trigger the Coliseum Bonus. This is a Free Spin bonus, with a picking game to randomise the number of free spins, the multiplier for those spins, and reels with additional scatter and wild symbols. Bet Sizes, RTP and Variance The return to player of this game is 94.09%. This is much too low. We use a yardstick for average of roughly 96%, and coming in two percentage points is a black mark which no slot is good enough to overcome. That sound you hear is our recommendation being thrown to the lions. The volatility of this game is medium. That would make it a poor match for our preferred slot machine strategies even if the RTP weren’t painfully low. Conclusion After one recovers from the shock of a licensed slot machine game without Russell Crowe, Hans Zimmer, or tigers, one can be shocked all over again by how lazy the design of this slot is. The user interface is ugly, the soundtrack is not very immersive, and the RTP is insanely low. There isn’t a single redeeming feature to this tired and lazy slot. Two thumbs down.
